Speaker of Parliament

Anita Annet Among (born 23 November 1973) is a Ugandan Accountant, Lawyer, and Politician, who serves as the Speaker of the 11th Parliament of Uganda (2022-2026) She served as Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda from May 2021 until March 2022. Among is also the District Woman Representative for Bukedea District in Parliament.

Background and Education

Among was born in Bukedea District. She attended Mbale High School and Masaka Advanced Level Academy for her O’ and A’ Level Education. In 2001, she joined Makerere University where she studied Business Administration. She graduated in 2005 in the same field. In 2006, she joined Makerere again, graduating in 2008 with a Master of Business Administration. She enrolled for a bachelors of Law, at Kampala International University, graduating in 2017

Career

In 2020, Among joined the Ruling National Resistance Movement, winning her party primaries and eventually being voted unopposed for her MP bid in 2021. Following the January general elections , Among declared her bid for the Deputy Speakership race, winning with 415 votes in March 2021. In May, 2022, Among was elected as Speaker of the 11th Parliament, replacing the late Speaker Jacob Oulanyah.

Other Parliamentary Duties

Among served as Vice Chairperson of the Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities, and State Enterprises (COSASE) in the 10th parliament while she was a Member of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

From 1998 until 2006, Among worked at Centenary Bank, and for the ten years before her election to Parliament, she served as a lecturer in Accounting at Makerere Business School and Kampala International University.
